We have executed consulting projects to review and assess a firm’s business and technology environment and evaluate and recommend the best uses for SharePoint. This work entails debriefings of technical staff and end users, analysis and review of existing systems, and preparation and presentation of findings and recommendations. One such project included a needs analysis and requirements definition to assist a firm with its planning for an upgrade migration from SharePoint 2003 to 2007.

Tributary’s SharePoint design services combine a detailed understanding of business requirements with deep technical knowledge of SharePoint to design a responsive and cost-effective solution. Our SharePoint designs include client extranets, intranets, executive dashboards and document workflow applications. These designs leverage native SharePoint functionality extended where appropriate by third-party tools and API customizations. We are also exploring the use of SharePoint as a platform for public-facing web sites by combining best of class web site development using standards-based XHTML and CSS with the publishing, content management and workflow capabilities of SharePoint.

Microsoft is focusing increased attention on its enterprise search capabilities as implemented with SharePoint and in Microsoft Search Server 2008. Tributary has designed and implemented SharePoint search functionality and is reviewing Microsoft’s newest search offering to see how they compare with other products on the market.

The most important thing to realize about SharePoint is that it isn’t intended to be a complete, off-the-shelf, shrink-wrapped product. Rather, Windows SharePoint Services (WSS) and even its big brother Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS) are development platforms , upon which powerful and compelling business applications can be built.
Our customization services include the use of native features and tools as well as of the API to create intuitive and efficient systems. One of systems we have customized involves extensive use of the SharePoint API to support a client extranet. This customized system accepts a feed of client financial statements from an external system, automates the creation of SharePoint client accounts and sites based on the feed, programmatically inserts the statements on the site, and notifies the clients of updates to their sites.
